About Deepa Sukumar
From Darkness to Light: A Journey of Divine Grace
Dr. Deepa Sukumar’s life is a story of profound transformation—from darkness into radiant light. Her journey reveals God’s relentless pursuit of His children and His sovereign ability to bring hope, healing, and redemption to even the most broken places.
Early Life in South India
Born and raised in predominantly Hindu South India, Deepa grew up in a family that deeply valued education. While Hindu traditions were observed, academic excellence remained the central priority of her upbringing. This commitment led her parents to enroll her in a Catholic school renowned for its high educational standards.
It was there that Deepa was first introduced to Christian songs, traditions, and the person of Jesus Christ. Yet she viewed Jesus merely as a good moral teacher-one among the countless deities of Hinduism. She did not recognize His divinity, nor did she understand His unique role as Savior.
Despite academic success and a structured environment, Deepa lived without true inner peace. From an early age, she felt pressure to perform for acceptance and later described her inner state as living under a “spirit of oppression.”
The Journey Toward Faith
During medical school, God began quietly orchestrating divine encounters in Deepa’s life. A classmate once boldly declared that Jesus called her His daughter—a statement Deepa initially rejected as emotional or religious manipulation.
More profoundly, God brought a friend into her life—a Christian convert from Hinduism—who would play a pivotal role in Deepa’s spiritual journey. Through years of steadfast prayer, Scripture reading, and gentle presence, this friend demonstrated unconditional and sacrificial love. She never pressured Deepa to convert, nor did she argue theology. Instead, she faithfully loved her, trusting God to work in His time.
Even so, Deepa resisted surrender. She selectively embraced the self-help principles she admired while refusing to acknowledge Jesus Christ as the true source of peace, freedom, and transformation.
The Moment of Divine Intervention
In December 1997, during her medical internship, Deepa reached a breaking point. Overwhelmed by despair and hopelessness, she contemplated ending her life. In utter desperation, she cried out, “If there is a force in heaven, do something about my life.”
The following morning brought divine rescue. As her friend read Hebrews 13:5—“I will never leave you nor forsake you”—the spirit of suicidal despair instantly lifted. In that moment, Deepa knew with unshakable certainty that Jesus Christ was Lord and fully divine.
She was flooded with hope, lightness, and peace, sensing a divine embrace unlike anything she had ever known. She later described feeling an “iron spine” form within her—a symbol of complete freedom from shame, guilt, and fear.
Although this encounter marked a decisive turning point, her full surrender unfolded gradually. Cultural and family pressures delayed her public commitment, but in December 1999, Deepa fully yielded her life to Jesus Christ, choosing Him as her only Lord and Savior, regardless of the cost.
Love, Marriage, and God’s Faithfulness
In 1999, Deepa met Sukumar, a devoted Hindu medical student who later followed her to the United States. During their long-distance relationship, Deepa felt deeply convicted to trust God fully with her future. She surrendered the relationship to the Lord, willing to release it if it was not part of His plan—particularly since Sukumar was not yet a believer.
In a beautiful demonstration of God’s sovereignty, Sukumar was encouraged by a Christian friend to read the Bible. He read the Old Testament in just two days before turning to the Gospels. The Gospel of John deeply moved him, revealing a love he had never experienced. Revelation 3:20 became a defining moment, leading him to place his faith in Jesus Christ.
God answered Deepa’s prayer for a Christian husband, and in 2005, they were married in a Christian ceremony—the first Christian wedding either had ever attended. Today, her parents stand as living witnesses to God’s faithfulness in her life.
